LAHORE: Federal Investment Minister Chaudhry Salik Hussain said the Belt and Road project is a new model of prosperity and development for countries in the region. He was addressing the closing ceremony of a three-day international conference on “The Role of the Belt and Road Project in Promoting Regional Connection” organized by the Regional Integration Center (RIC) of the University of Punjab in association with the Chinese Embassy at Al-Raazi Hall.
On this occasion, Ambassador of Indonesia Adam Mulawarman Tugio, Ambassador of Kazakhstan Yerzhan Kistafin, Ambassador of Uzbekistan Aybek A Usmanov, Deputy Head of Mission of the Embassy of Azerbaijan Tamerlan Khalilov, former VC of the ‘UP Dr Muhammad Saleem Mazhar, Vice Chancellor Mian Nawaz Sharif Agriculture University Faisalabad Dr Asif Ali, Executive Director Pakistan Research Center for a Community with Shared Future Communication University of China Khalid Taimur Akram, RIC Director Dr Fouzia Hadi Ali, members of the faculty and a large number of researchers from 18 countries and 20 leading Pakistani universities were present.
In his remarks, Chaudhry Salik Hussain said China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) will connect Central Asia, South Asia, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, the Europe and Russia. Relations between the countries of the region must be strengthened for socio-economic development. The project would improve public and cultural links between the countries of the region. He said the Belt and Road Initiative is a hope for a better future for the region and CPEC will increase export and investment opportunities in Pakistan.
He said the process of obtaining NOCs for starting a business would be simplified for the convenience of investors. He said Turkey is using modern agricultural means and Pakistan also needs to adopt modern technology to increase agricultural exports.
Indonesian Ambassador Adam Togio said the geographical location of Indonesia and Pakistan is important and the two countries should promote business cooperation. At present, it was necessary to strengthen ties between the countries of the region.
Kazakhstan Ambassador Yazrhan Kastafen said: “Kazakhstan is a landlocked country, but the BRI can create the best opportunities for countries to connect with each other.”
Azerbaijan’s Deputy Chief of Mission Temirlin Khalilov said the bilateral ties will boost socio-economic development and tourism. Azerbaijan is fully ready to join the BRI project.
Former VC Dr Muhammad Saleem Mazhar said that for the first time a large number of Central Asian delegates were attending the conference. He said that universities are an important source of socio-economic development and that relations between countries in the region should be promoted as a priority.
The services of Col Khalid Taimor (R), Dr Fauzia Hadi Ali, Deputy Registrar Tashfeen and Maryam from PRCCSF were appreciated for playing a key role in the successful organization of the conference.
