Premier League duo Tottenham and Newcastle have both offered Roma £25million to try and sign their Brazilian defender, Roger Ibanez.
Reports from Italy have confirmed that Spurs and Newcastle hold an interest in Ibanez, who was a key figure for the Roma club when they won the UEFA Conference League last season. Calcio24Newswho quote Italian outlet Il Messaggero, say the English duo have offered around £25m for the defender.
However, Roma are not expected to accept such an offer. Ibanez has a contract in place with a release clause that is closer to the £70m mark. And Jose Mourinho is not just going to accept a favorable offer from his former club or the Toon when it comes to Ibanez.
Tottenham, as we know, are desperate to sign a new defender this summer. They are big admirers of fellow Serie A star Alessandro Bastoni. However, the Inter Milan star appears to be staying in Milan for the time being unless circumstances change drastically.
Ibanez, meanwhile, represents another option for Spurs to explore. He redid 50 appearances last season for Roma, showing both good form and resilience to play so many minutes.
TBR POV: Roger Ibanez worth a look for Tottenham
We all know Fabio Paratici likes to have a number of names on his list so it’s no surprise to see someone like Ibanez linked with Tottenham.
Ibanez was a class act for Roma last season as he showed strength, desire and excellent form to be a key performer for Jose Mourinho. And as a defender, if you’re good enough for Mourinho, then you’re normally good enough for anyone.
For Spurs, they need to have players lined up that they can strike for quickly. And while Roma may not be selling Ibanez on the cheap, Spurs have the cash to potentially tempt him.
