April 29 (THEWILL) – Following his spectacular game-winning performance for Feyenoord on Thursday, Super Eagles striker Cyriel Dessers has been named the UEFA Conference League Player of the Week.
The 27-year-old beat Feyenoord team-mate Luis Sinisterra, AS Roma’s Lorenzo Pellegrini and fellow countryman Ademola Lookman of Leicester City to claim the honour.
Ademola Lookman, the Foxes’ Nigerian winger, finished third on the list of best players of the week after his second-half goal earned the Foxes a 1-1 draw at the King Power Stadium against Jose’s Roma Mourinho.
Dessers, on the other hand, was clearly the best of the group after his magnificent brace led Feyenoord to a 3-2 first-leg win over Marseille in the semi-finals.
As a result, the on-loan Genk striker became the first player in the new Conference League to score ten goals. Dessers is also the competition’s all-time top scorer, having shared the lead with AS Roma’s Tammy Abraham, who scored eight goals.
Dessers is favorite to win the Conference League Player of the Tournament honor at the end of the season.
If Feyenoord avoid defeat in the second leg in Marseille next week, they will advance to the competition final and the club’s first European final in 20 years.
